What do I do if I have problems collecting my sample?

The Home Blood Test kit includes advice on how to collect your sample. If you do have difficulties in collecting the sample, you can contact the lab directly and they will talk you through the process.

Tips for collecting your sample:

  • Make sure you are well hydrated
  • Warm your hands up to increase the blood flow to your fingers
  • Try putting an elastic band around your middle knuckle as a tourniquet
Are finger prick tests easy to do?

Yes, anyone can collect the sample required by following the instructions provided. The kit includes 3-4 small lancets which pierce your skin, and you then need to gently massage your fingertip to help the droplets into the tube provided.

Where can I see what markers are included in my test?

Detailed information about the markers for the health screening tests offered by Onhealth is available on our website and can be downloaded in PDF format as required.

Does HRT or Hormonal Contraception affect the blood tests?

Our Female Hormone and Menopause Health Tests can both be taken if you are using hormonal contraception or are on HRT. In fact, the Menopause Health Test is ideal for women on HRT. However, if you are using a hormone gel, please ensure you scrub your hands and fingertips thoroughly before collecting your blood sample, as the residue from the gel can remain on your skin and will affect the results of your test.

Are there any age restrictions?

Onhealth’s Health Screening Tests are for adults only and cannot be purchased for children under the age of 18.

How soon after taking the sample should I return it to the lab?

It is essential that the blood test is posted to the lab on the same day it is taken. We recommend posting your sample between Monday and Thursday to avoid delays. The sample tubes contain a reagent to stabilise the blood, but extended delays may result in failed analysis.

How long does it take for the kit to arrive?

The test kits are sent from our associated laboratory by Royal Mail First Class delivery and usually arrive within 1-2 business days. If you have not received your kit within 7 days of purchasing your Health Screening Test, please contact Onhealth and we will liaise with the lab to provide a replacement kit free of charge.

What is included in the Home Blood Test kit?

The Home Blood Test kit includes the following:

  • Test Tubes
  • 3-4 Lancets
  • Sterilising wipes
  • Plasters
  • Lab request form with labels
  • Plastic case to protect your sample in transit to the lab
  • Tracked-24 Hour Service pre-paid return packaging
Where do I keep my kit if I am not ready to take the test yet?

When you receive your Home Blood Test kit, you may be advised to wait until a particular time of day to take the sample. Your kit should be stored in a cool, dry place and out of direct sunlight as extreme temperatures could affect the analysis of your sample.

How accurate are the Home Blood Tests?

Our associated labs operate a strict quality control programme to ensure high standards are met on a daily basis. Each biomarker is analysed and validated through ISO 15189. All of our associated laboratories hold UKAS Accreditation ISO 15189, which is internationally recognised as the “gold standard” in the health industry. This is the same standard expected of NHS laboratories.

Can I get a replacement kit?

If you are unsuccessful in collecting a sample, you can order a replacement kit through the “My Orders” section of your personalised dashboard in the online portal. Please note that a replacement kit costs £10.00.

How do I package my sample for secure delivery?

Once you have collected your sample, ensure the lids are clicked securely onto the test tubes and properly labelled. Place the sample into the protective plastic casing and put this, together with your completed lab request form, back in the box. The box should then be placed in the return envelope and sealed. This will ensure the sample is properly protected during the transit to the lab.

NOTE: If your blood test is part of the Weight Management Programme, remember to indicate on the lab request form that you consent for Onhealth to view the results in preparation of your 12-week plan.

Do you offer free return postage?

Yes, all of the Home Blood Test kits include pre-paid return packaging.

Is the return packaging discreet?

Yes, the pre-paid packaging has no branding and does not give an indication of the package contents.

How long does it take to get the results?

The majority of the finger prick blood tests are processed, and the results made available within 2 working days of the lab receiving the sample. Please see below an example timeline for your test:

  • Monday – you take the blood test at home and post your sample the same day using the Tracked-24 Hour Service packaging provided.
  • Tuesday – the sample arrives at the allocated lab. Please note that if there has been a delay within Royal Mail’s system, it may take longer for the sample to reach the lab. Onhealth and the laboratory are unable to control delays such as these.
  • Wednesday – your blood sample is analysed at the lab, the results are collected and passed to the lab’s medical team for review.
  • Thursday – the results are made available on your personalised dashboard in the online portal.
