Severe Period Pain: Medical Leave to be Available in Spain

In a unique step forward, medical leave is set to become available in Spain for severe period pain.

Still in a draft format, the bill says women could have three days in a month as leave for this type of ailment, which could be extended to five in certain circumstances.

Just a few countries across the world have this type of legislation in place, with Spain’s proposed version requiring a doctor’s note to support the application, with a five-day sick leave time for particularly intense or incapacitating pain.

Period pain, especially severe period pain, can be hugely restrictive to women, who previously haven’t had the option to take time off for this reason.

A monthly problem for millions of women, periods relate to female hormones which naturally fluctuate throughout the month.

But many can be affected by an inherent imbalance that can affect mood, weight, energy levels, and general well-being. There are also potential issues with irregular periods, problems with fertility, and conception, and can be an indication of underlying thyroid conditions.

Approximately 80% of women suffer hormone imbalances and are six times more likely to have thyroid problems than men.

Understanding your hormone levels could provide valuable insights into your symptoms, which may include:

  • Changes in your periods
  • Weight gain
  • Acne
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Hair loss or thinning
  • Night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness/aches/tenderness/stiffness
  • Mood changes
