Growing numbers of people are paying for private medical treatment in the UK because of record waiting times to access NHS care, according to a recently released report.

But, it seems, those who can afford to go private with their treatment needs are taking up that avenue to avoid extended waiting times.

The report said: “With the main demographic group for self-pay being the over 55-year-olds, it may be that inability to spend on other lifestyle options and considered purchases such as leisure, holidays and eating out in the past two years may influence spending on health and wellbeing.”

According to the Guardian, some providers of private diagnostic tests have indicated rises of 50 – 60% in the last 12 months.
