While working from home, millions of people have stretched the home-work boundaries a little, including in what their working from home uniform looks like!
A recent study found almost a third of respondents had worn pyjamas during virtual work meetings, making for a very different working from home uniform to the one adopted in the office environment pre-pandemic.
According to the YouGov and Otter.ai poll of 2,000 UK and US workers who were home-based, one in 10 even went as far as to say they had held virtual video calls without wearing any trousers.
Working from home has been unique to those who have been forced to do so when normally they would spend their shifts in the office.
Something of a novelty, to begin with, a year later it has become the norm and is now par for the course leading to a sense of fatigue among many.
How can you avoid that lethargy and continue being productive while the home-working routine remains?
Start and Finish Routine
One of the biggest difficulties is separating home and work when the environment remains the same.
But by providing clear boundaries between the work day and time off, then you can rationalise and maintain it better in your mind.
By getting up for work at set times and being ready to start at set times, following a regular morning routine, then you will feel more set-up for the work day ahead. The same applies at the end of the day; by closing the laptop and leaving that work space, you clearly define work from home.
Where do you work?
By setting up a designated workspace, and sticking to it, you can mentally define what is work and what is home.
It is important to avoid falling into the trap of working from bed, using the sofa or any other temporary measure which extends a previous task (resting in bed, for example) that is not work related.
Avoid distractions
By avoiding home life distractions, you can focus fully on your work. Switching off the TV in the background or ensuring the door remains closed to your office, if you have one, then that allows you to settle on the work tasks at hand.
If you are missing that dedicated workspace while working from home, by asking your company for a remote workstation assessment you can get peace of mind that your work set-up at home is helping you to achieve your best.
