We recently opened our doors in January 2019 and have had our first clients complete their initial 12-week weight loss programme.
Shaun Hughes (34) and Karen Stevenson (54) both embarked on the programme of diet, exercise and mind-coaching after reaching their heaviest weight and recognising they needed help to tackle the lifestyle changes necessary to become healthier and fitter.
Shaun’s starting weight was 177.8kgs (27st 10lbs) – this, coupled with high blood pressure, meant he had serious concerns about his long-term health. “With a wife and a young family, I knew that I had to do something about it. What the programme has done is change my mindset completely.”
In the space of 12 weeks Shaun has shed an incredible 17.2kgs (2st 10lbs); he has ‘normal’ blood pressure and has reduced his heart rate from 88 to 66 beats per minute (BPM).
Karen’s starting weight was 96.15kgs (15st 14lbs) and in the space of 12 weeks she has lost 8.12kgs (1st 2lbs) and has reversed her pre-diabetic diagnosis. “I have actually found the transition to making healthier choices quite easy. I’ve occasionally been tempted to slip back into eating comfort foods, but my weekly weigh-ins and motivation from the Onhealth course leader and fellow dieters has kept me motivated.”
Both Shaun and Karen agree that the key to their success so far has been taking the time, with the help of their dietitian, to plan meals and make better choices when it comes to food. Shaun said, “I often prepare food the night before and take it with me to work which prevents me from falling back into old lunchtime eating habits. I even plan my snacks for the day – having fruit or yoghurt instead of crisps.”
Interestingly, both say that they haven’t found the diet difficult to follow or maintain. “Strangely enough it’s been quite easy” explains Shaun. “I think this has been down to getting the right mindset in place from early in the programme. Onhealth certainly help me focus on this and there is a euphoric feeling when I step on the scales and see the progressive weight loss.”
The North East has the highest number of patients admitted to hospital with obesity as the primary diagnosis of any other region in the UK. In 2016/2017, 1,570 people were admitted which works out at a rate of 63 people per 100,000 - more than triple the national average.
